What Is An Orthodontist?
Orthodontists are highly trained and skilled professionals who specialize in diagnosing, preventing, and correcting misalignments of the teeth and jaws that affect your bite and smile. The types of misalignments orthodontists treat include open bite, underbite, crossbite, overbite, overcrowding, spaces between teeth, and crookedness. Whether the problem is minor or more complex, Pacific Northwest Orthodontics can treat it.
How Does Orthodontic Treatment Work?
These misalignments are most often treated with braces or Invisalign, which gradually shift teeth into alignment over a period of time. Dr. Virk or Dr. Tamasas will thoroughly examine your teeth and jaws to diagnose your problem and determine if you are healthy enough for treatment. Deciding what kind of treatment is right for you should not take long. We’ll create a treatment plan and create a digital model of your teeth to customize your braces or Invisalign.
Treatment lengths vary from patient t0 patient, often lasting between 12-18 months, but can be shorter or longer depending on the severity of your problem, how well your teeth respond, and how consistently you maintain/wear your hardware. Follow-up appointments allow us to check you progress and make changes to your treatment if necessary. Once treatment is complete, you’ll have to wear a retainer to prevent your teeth from shifting back.

Treatments Offered
Pacific Northwest Orthodontics offers a variety of treatment options for our patients so they can choose the one that is right for them.
Traditional Metal Braces
Traditional metal braces are made from stainless steel or titanium alloys for maximum strength and durablity. Brackets are bonded to the front of each tooth using a special adhesive. The brackets hold the archwire, which Dr. Virk or Dr. Tamasas will need to tighten from time to time during follow-up appointments. Elastic bands will add additional pressure.
Braces are not removable. Therefore, patients must adhere to some dietary restrictions to prevent harm to their hardware and teeth until treatment is complete. Braces are also more difficult to clean. But the results are worth the inconveniences.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces offer patients an alternative to traditional braces that is less visible if your appearance during treatment is particularly important to you. The brackets are larger than those of traditional braces and are made of polycrystalline alumina. This allows the brackets and even the archwire to be clear or natural tooth color so your hardware is less noticeable.
There are some drawbacks, however. While ceramic braces offer a less visible option, they tend to be more susceptible to damage because the material is not as durable. And since the brackets cover a larger area of each tooth, the risk of enamel wear is higher. But that just means patients need to be more careful when they eat and more diligent when it comes to cleaning.
Self-Ligating Braces
Self-Ligating braces are an innovative technological breakthrough. The brackets, which can also be clear or natural tooth color, feature a special door that clips in the archwire. This provides easier access to the wire so the orthodontist can quickly tighten it, reducing your time in the dental chair. Elastic bands are not neccessary and treatment time can also be shorter.
Invisalign
One of the most popular orthodontic treatments in the world today, Invisalign is a series of clear removable aligners that work the same way as braces, only without the inconvenience to your lifestyle. There are no dietary restrictions and they are easier to clean. You wear the aligners for 22 hours a day and switch to a new set every two weeks. They are made with multiple layers of medical-grade plastic for maximum comfort all while being virtually invisible to others.
Technology
- iTero Digital Scanner
An iTero digital scanner creates a digital map of your teeth without the need for you to bite down into a tray of dental putty.
- AcceleDent
AcceleDent is a device you wear for 20 minutes a day to stimulate your teeth into shifting faster during braces or Invisalign treatment.
Treatment Cost
The cost of treatment can range from $3,500 to $8,000 or more. Factors that will determine your final cost include your location, the kind of treatment you choose, the complexity of your problem, the length of your treatment, and the experience level of your orthodontist.
Pacific Northwest Orthodontics offers low monthly payment plans that fit just about any budget, Dental insurance can also reduce your cost because it usually covers at least part of the cost of treatment.
